No YouTube? Watch on Bilibili: 断链·异境 DISCONNECT

Work Description
How are we disconnected from nature? How to reconnect to nature? We combined interviews, virtual world, and sound design to investigate people’s relationship to nature.
This group project investigates the theme of disconnection from nature through a dystopian, multi-layered narrative that juxtaposes virtual existence with the natural world. Employing digital techniques such as VFX and experimental sound design, the work traces a visual journey from muted, grey urban environments to vivid, saturated representations of nature—often accessible only via digital screens.
The piece critically examines how technology mediates and reframes our relationship with the environment, highlighting a tendency to experience nature as a digital projection rather than through direct engagement. Interspersed interviews reveal a complex emotional landscape in which individuals express both alienation from and longing for nature.
In its concluding scene, a figure sets aside their phone, inviting viewers to reconsider passive consumption habits. The looping narrative structure, underscored by the act of swiping to another video, reinforces a recursive “story within a story” framework.
While the work’s tone is distinctly dystopian, it also gestures toward the potential for technology to play imaginative and constructive roles in redefining our connection to the natural world.
